The Frozen 5

Frozen 5 HoursThe plan was simple really. Get in 5 hours of riding at endurance tempo. The crazies that joined me today for a very frigid 5 hour ride were Carney and Jason. Some of us were dressed better than others, but in the long run that didn't matter. The day started off with about 2 hours of climbing up and beyond Gold HIll. That got the body core warm.....and then chilled as we dropped into Gold Hill. Very cold toes and fingers made it an easy decision to stop at the Gold Hill Store for a bit of fire time....and coffee!

Frozen 5 Hours
Coffee number 1 was $1.50. It hit the spot!

Frozen 5 HoursFor me, my toes were the only things getting cold. Mostly my fault, as I did not opt for the thermal booties today. Good thing they had the toasty warm fire running at Gold Hill. The fire also served as good clothes dryer for all the sweat soaked clothes. Can you smell me?

Frozen 5 HoursCoffee number 2 was 50¢. It almost got me back up to a normal core temp. Almost.

Frozen 5 Hours
Being cold made some of us very violent. Argh! It was an attempt to build up some inner body heat.

Frozen 5 Hours
After we got warm, we kept pushing on west. The further west we went it got colder...and the roads got a bit more snowy. I guess it is to be expected above 9,000ft this time of year.

Frozen 5 HoursWe eventually dropped a bit lower via Sawmill Rd, before climbing back up to Gold Hill via Lickskillet Rd. From here, it was all down hill to Boulder.....and a stupid cold ass wind chill!

Here is the grand finale...the final drop down to Boulder. A very fridged 28F.....30+ mph speeds.....one crash/drift through a corner.....and a close call with an oncoming black 4x4 truck with 4 ft wide mirrors. Enjoy!
